Receiving a serve in pickleball: 8 tips for winning

Whether you are a beginner just starting to learn the rules of pickleball or an experienced player looking to improve your game, the right serve is the key to success. This article will cover 8 important tips that will help you to effectively receive serves and control the game.у. Previously, we also wrote about the basic rules of pickleball.

8 tips for receiving a serve in pickleball

1. Take the starting position

Before serving, one partner should position themselves near the kitchen line (non-volley zone) and the other 60-90 cm behind the baseline. This position will provide enough time to react to the serve and optimize the distribution of effort. The right start is the key to a successful reception. Remember to be ready for quick movements.

2. Move your feet

Most players have a stronger forehand than a backhand. Therefore, it is advisable to receive most of the serves with the forehand. However, if the serve is directed to the backhand and it is difficult to beat it with the forehand, feel free to use the backhand – the main thing is to receive the serve well. Active footwork will allow you to take the optimal position for the shot.

3. Short swings and concentration on the ball

Short, controlled swings will help you maintain balance and accuracy. Keep your eyes on the ball during the entire reception to prevent unintentional mistakes. Concentration is an important aspect of a successful reception.

4. Vary your strokes

Although most serves are best served deep and centered, shifting the ball slightly toward the opponent’s backhand, don’t be afraid to experiment. Varying your strokes makes it impossible for your opponent to predict your actions.

5. Play on a smaller court

Do not try to reach the opponent’s baseline. Aim 60-90 cm away from it to avoid mistakes related to the ball going out of bounds. Controlled reception is more important than aggressiveness.

6. Move towards the kitchen line

After receiving the serve, immediately move to the kitchen line and hold your position near it. This will allow you to control the game and react quickly to further actions of your opponent.

7. Use the forehead (candle)

A lob is a pickleball shot where you give the ball a high trajectory and send it relatively high into the air.

If you find it difficult to quickly reach the kitchen line after receiving, try using a headstroke. It will give you more time, but consider the effects of the wind.

8. Exploit your opponent’s weaknesses

Analyze your opponent’s game. If one of them has a weaker third shot, aim your serves there. An effective strategy is to take into account the individual characteristics of your opponents’ game.

Applying these tips will help you improve your pickleball serve reception and raise your game level. Remember that practice is the key to success. Practice regularly, analyze your mistakes, and enjoy the game!
